NEWCASTLE Conservatorium will present a piano recital by Andrew Chubb tomorrow night, 8pm at Newcastle Conservatorium Concert Hall.
The recital will feature music by Philip Glass, including excerpts from the acclaimed musical score for Stephen Daldry's film The Hours. In addition to being an accomplished classical pianist and published composer, Andrew continues to pursue a teaching career at the Conservatorium of Music where he has been a member of staff since 1999.Tickets are $15 adults, $12 concession, $9 children, available at the door or by phoning 4921 8905.? THE Australian Army Band will join forces for a friendly engagement with the University of Newcastle Wind Orchestra in what promises to be a spectacular evening of music for band on Saturday night, 8pm at the Conservatorium Concert Hall. The highlight of the program will be Alfred Reed's Symphony No 4. First commissioned as the test piece for the 1993 Kerkrade World Music Contest in The Netherlands, this work has become a major work of the modern wind band repertoire. An unusual feature of this performance will be the inclusion of six cellists. The cello is not normally a wind band instrument; however, Reed has used the tone colour of the cello to add a further dimension to the sonority of the wind orchestra. The concert will feature two soloists.Erica Hayes is in her final year of the Bachelor of Music program at the university and will perform the Variations for Oboe and Band by Rimsky Korsakov. Radu Boros is a member of the Australian Army Band and will be the soloist in the Horn Concerto No 1 by Richard Strauss. The Wind Orchestra will also perform Aaron Copland's An Outdoor Overture and Klezmer Classics by Johan de Meij.Built around many Klezmer tunes played at Jewish weddings, this latter piece has a strong and entertaining rhythmical character which proved very popular on the Wind Orchestra's recent tour to China. The program will also feature music by Dmitri Shostakovich, Percy Grainger and Malcolm Arnold. The Australian Army Band will be conducted by Major Andrea Davey and the Wind Orchestra by Ian Cook.Tickets are $15 adults, $10 concession and $5 children, available at the door.? ORCHESTRA Nova will present a concert titled Celestial Classics on Sunday afternoon, 2pm at Newcastle City Hall. The concert will feature Orchestra Nova and Woollahra Philharmonic Symphony. The two groups spent a weekend together earlier this month putting the final touches on this celestial program.John Kellaway will conduct three excerpts from Wagner's Ring Cycle: The Ring of Nibelungen, Entry of The Gods into Valhalla from Rheingold, Forest Murmurs from Siegfried and Siegfried's Rhine Journey from Gotterdamerung.Mathias Rogala-Koczorowski will conduct Gustav Holst's famous work The Planets, featuring Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.Tickets are $15 adults, $10 concession, $5 children and $35 family, available at the door from 1pm or by phoning 0438 662 484.?
