THE Tallis Scholars are renowned for their purity of sound, the ethereal atmosphere they create in concerts, and the transcendent power of their sound. But they also have no hesitation in saying Australia is their favourite touring destination. Is it for the audience enthusiasm? For our choral tradition and passion? For our renowned concert halls?

Nope, it's our climate and cricket. "I am a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club and of course feel disappointed about our recent Ashes result," says Tallis Scholars founder Peter Phillips, "but I still cannot wait to be back in the land of Bradman, Benaud and Warne - total bliss."

Phillips founded the Scholars in 1973. The musicians are now the world's leading exponents of Renaissance choral music.

But it's not all an old-time rut for the musicians - they also commission new works, present world premieres and collaborate with Sting and Vanessa Redgrave, among others.

On their sixth Australian visit, they will perform the most famous of all Renaissance works, Allegri's Miserere.
